English Short Story (with Translation):
One rainy afternoon in London, Lily, a Chinese student studying abroad, ordered a "cappuccino" at a café. The barista asked, “Would you like that with milk or cream?” Lily, eager to sound fluent, replied confidently: “I’d like it with… um… ‘cream’.”
The barista smiled and said, “Great! That’s a classic choice — we call it ‘latte’ in English.”
Lily froze. Her face turned red. She whispered, “Wait… I meant to say ‘milk’. I just wanted to sound smart!”
The barista laughed gently: “No worries! You’re not the first nonnative speaker to confuse ‘cappuccino’ with ‘latte’. We all do it sometimes. Even Brits mix up ‘biscuit’ and ‘cookie’!”
So Lily learned two things that day: 1) Don’t try to impress with fancy words when you're tired; 2) Mistakes are the best teachers — especially when they make others laugh.
?? 小貼士:下次你在國(guó)外點(diǎn)咖啡時(shí),不妨試試說(shuō)一句:“Just a regular coffee — no fancy names needed!”
